The 2022/23 EFL season continues to entertain and Playmaker is here once again to give you all the highlights of a busy Saturday.

      Let's get started...

      Championship

Norwich City went top of the table with a fine performance at Carrow Road. Teemu Pukki got his first goal of the season, Josh Sargent scored his fifth of the campaign, and Kieran Dowell came off the bench to score in a 3-0 win over Coventry City.

Sheffield United can take first place back should they win in tomorrow’s clash with Hull City. Meanwhile, the Sky Blues remain bottom of the league with just one point earned so far.

Just two points behind Norwich are Bristol City. The Robins are undefeated in their last six games in the league and managed a 3-2 win away at Ewood Park. Blackburn Rovers proved stubborn opposition but had no answer to Nahki Wells’ winner with Tommy Conway also on the scoresheet.

Preston North End’s defence was finally breached with Ryan Lowe’s team conceding their first goal of the season. Maxime Colin’s 16th-minute goal was enough to give Birmingham City all three points at Deepdale.

There were some good results for the recently-promoted teams. Rotherham United managed a 1-1 draw at home to Watford. Defender Richard Wood, who has been among the goals this season, scored once again for the Millers. It’s the 37-year-old’s fourth goal of the season. Vakoun Bayo managed to grab an equaliser for Rob Edwards’ side.

While Wigan Athletic came from behind to win 2-1 away to Luton Town. The Hatters took the lead through Carlton Morris but two goals in the fine ten minutes gave Leam Richardson’s team the win. Callum Lang’s shot took a big deflection off of Tom Lockyer before Thelo Aasgaard gave the Latics the win in style in the 88th minute.

Elsewhere, Millwall returned to winning ways after a 2-0 victory over Cardiff City while Swansea City won 1-0 at home to QPR.

      League One

The most heartwarming story this weekend came in League One. Jay Stansfield, the son of the late Exeter City footballer Adam Stansfield, made his debut for the club wearing the number nine shirt. The shirt number was retired following Adam Stansfield’s death in 2010.

Stansfield came off the bench for the Grecians in the 79th minute with Exeter City already 1-0 up at home to MK Dons through Cheick Diabate. The visitors couldn’t find a way back into the game.

Two promotion favourites faced off at Fratton Park with Portsmouth taking on Peterborough United. Dane Scarlett was among the goals once again, scoring a brace in Pompey’s 2-1 win with Jack Marriott scoring the Posh’s only goal.

Portsmouth stay second in the table on 17 points with Ipswich Town ahead on goal difference. Conor Chaplin and Wes Burns popped up late for the Tractor Boys as they won away to Accrington Stanley.

Plymouth Argyle are third in League One after coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Pride Park. Sam Cosgrove had a dream debut for Argyle, coming off the bench to score twice – including a last minute winner.

In a South Yorkshire derby, Barnsley won 2-0 away to Sheffield Wednesday to move up to 10th. Devante Cole and James Norwood gave Michael Duff’s team the win.

      League Two

Top-of-the-table Leyton Orient are still unbeaten in League Two and won yet again at home to Tranmere Rovers. Richie Wellens' team took the lead thanks to a Josh Cogley own goal before Paul Smyth wrapped up the win. Orient have won all four of the home games in the league so far this season.

Stevenage remain three points behind the league leaders. Jamie Reid scored a brace in a 2-1 win away to Crewe Alexandra. That result moves the Boro up to second after Barrow lost 3-1 away to Northampton Town.

Doncaster Rovers also lost points, suffering their first defeat of the season at home to Mansfield Town while Salford City could only manage a draw with Crawley Town.

At the bottom of the table, Rochdale must have thought that they were going to get their first win of the season when they went 3-1 up away to Carlisle United. However, Kristian Dennis and Paul Huntington earned the Cumbrians a point.
