Erling Haaland struck once again, this time again his old club, to give Manchester City the win at home to Borussia Dortmund.
Pep Guardiola made four changes following City’s 4-0 away to Sevilla last week. John Stones, Ilkay Gundogan, Riyad Mahrez, and Nathan Aké all started ahead of Rúben Dias, Sergio Gomes, Bernardo Silva, and Phil Foden.
Borussia Dortmund were thoroughly defeated by RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga last weekend but looked much more solid at the Etihad.
Indeed, the German side limited Manchester City to very little in the first half while threatening little themselves.
All the action came in the second half. Dortmund took the lead just ten minutes after the restart when Giovanni Reyna’s corner came out to Marco Reus. The German shot was then headed in by Jude Bellingham to put the visitors ahead.
When City did get the leveller in the 80th minute it was with their first shot on target, which shows how well Dortmund had been defending. It was an unlikely goal too, a long-range effort by John Stones that Alexander Meyer should have dealt with better.
City then got the winning goal just four minutes later. A superb cross with the outside of João Cancelo’s right boot was met by Erling Haaland (of course) with the Norwegian producing a Zlatanesque finish to make it 26 Champions League goals in 21 games for the striker.
xG: Manchester City (1.11) 2-1 (0.83) Borussia Dortmund
