Championship round-up: Burnley leave it late again

Burnley took advantage of Blackburn’s defeat and moved five points clear at the top of the Championship in another dramatic finale at Turf Moor.

It was another exciting round of Championship football with games played on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The stand-out is of course Vincent Kompany’s team showing that they won’t go down so easily. Rotherham United were 2-1 up in Lancashire with 90 minutes gone in the game. But Burnley topped their late win over Reading at the weekend with an even later comeback.

Manuel Benson made it 2-2 just after the 90th minute before Halil Dervişoğlu scored in the 100th minute – the perfect time for the Turkey international to score his first goal for the club.

That result moves Burnley five points clear after Blackburn Rovers lost 1-0 away to Coventry City on Tuesday. It was a welcome reprieve for Coventry fans considering the off-field troubles with the CBS Arena’s owners going into administration.

Queens Park Rangers had a chance to take second place in their game but could only manage a goalless draw away to Norwich City. The Canaries could have won it when Grant Hanley hit the post in the final second of the game.

Taking advantage of that draw is Sheffield United, who are now third in the league. The Blades are now playing themselves back into form after a bad patch and won 1-0 away to Bristol City thanks to Iliman Ndiaye getting on the scoresheet yet again.

Elsewhere, Watford have moved into the play-off places after coming from behind against Cardiff City with Francisco Sierralta and Ismaila Sarr.

And there was also good news for two of the new managers in the Championship. Michael Carrick and Carlos Corberán both lost their first games in charge of their respective clubs over the weekend and midweek saw them both win.

Carrick’s Middlesbrough team took advantage of two own goals to defeat Hull City 3-1 away from home, while Okay Yokuslu gave Corberán’s West Brom a much-needed win.

Of course, there’s plenty more to come in the Championship this week. Reading host Preston in Friday evening’s kick-off before a big Saturday that includes Sheffield United v Burnley at Bramall Lane.
