England weather US storm to earn point

England came back down to earth with a bump as they drew 0-0 against the United States in their second Group B game at the 2022 World Cup on Friday. 

The euphoria of the Three Lions' 6-2 win over Iran on Monday quickly dissipated, as a sluggish and one-paced England failed to cope with the energetic pressing game of Gregg Berhalter's US team. 

England chalked up another point on the board at this winter's World Cup by grinding out a lacklustre 0-0 draw - and the writing was on the wall early on, as Gareth Southgate's side opted to control possession in defensive areas: John Stones and Harry Maguire seeing a lot of the ball in the first 10 minutes of the contest. 

Harry Kane had one shot well blocked, but England were struggling to play with the tempo and flair that was so evident against Iran and gradually the US gained the ascendency. 

Gareth Southgate's side fell more and more off the pace and the USA grew in confidence: Weston McKennie going close before Chelsea's Christian Pulisic crashed a ferocious strike against the bar before the break.

After the interval, England found it arguably even harder to impose themselves, centre-half Maguire notably putting in a rock solid performance at the back to keep the US at bay. 

So, where are England now after an underwhelming performance? Well, only defeat to Wales by four goals or more would prevent Southgate's group leaders from making the knockout stages, but there are likely to be plenty of questions fired at the England manager between now and Monday's clash with Rob Page's Wales.

USA, meanwhile, are third in Group B, a point behind Iran, who they take on on Tuesday. A win would see the US make the last 16.
