Grimsby Town secured a famous FA Cup upset with a 2-1 win away to Southampton after Gavan Holohan scored two penalties.
It’s been a difficult season for Saints fans and this was another low moment for the team while a historic one for the Mariners who sealed their first FA Cup quarter-final since 1939.
Rubén Sellés named a rotated starting XI including Lyanco returning to defence but it was the Brazilian who was at fault for Grimsby’s first penalty.
Thomas Bramall was called to the VAR monitor just before half-time to see Lyanco intercept a Grimsby cross with his elbow and the referee pointed to the spot.
Gavan Holohan stepped up and coolly slotted his spot-kick past Alex McCarthy – the Saints goalkeeper making just his third appearance of the season.
On the other side of half-time Grimsby won another penalty. This time it was for Duje Caleta-Car’s flailing arm striking the back of Danilo Orsi. Again Holohan kept his cool from the spot to put Grimsby 2-0 up.
Caleta-Car did bring Southampton back into the game when he got on to the end of James Ward-Prowse’s corner with 25 minutes left to play.
Theo Walcott thought he had grabbed an equaliser late on but the forward had just strayed offside giving the League Two side to claim a surprise Premier League scalp.
