Wexham have confirmed their promotion to League Two by clinching the National League title at home to Boreham Wood.
The stars looked to be aligning for the Red Dragons with this game coming exactly 15 years since the team were relegated from the Football League.
It’s been a long exile, but Wrexham have more than deserved their return. The game didn’t start exactly how the home side would have wanted though with Boreham Wood taking the lead within seconds after a long ball over the top was received by Lee Ndlovu who chipped it over Ben Foster.
But Wrexham were level soon after. In the 15th minute, Elliott Lee found space at the back post to head Ryan Barnett’s cross home from close range.
The home side took the lead seven minutes after the restart when Paul Mullin picked up the ball on the left, turned back inside, and then launched a superb strike that Nathan Ashmore wasn’t able to stop.
Mullin confirmed the result with another great effort. This time he latched on to a ball, kept his cool as he drove toward goal, and then hit another powerful effort to seal the win and grab his 45th goal of the season in some style.
With 19 minutes left to play after that goal, Wrexham fans were then able to enjoy the rest of the game and celebrate a famous promotion after a nerve-racking campaign.
Phil Parkinson will then have to get his side ready for one more game of the season as the newly-crowned champions face a trip to Torquay United next Saturday.
