Newcastle edge past Man City to progress in Carabao Cup

Newcastle United put an end to Manchester City's hopes of winning a quadruple with a 1-0 victory in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

In the initial 45 minutes at St James' Park, the hosts found themselves primarily on the defensive, as Manchester City controlled the game with their superior ball possession and territorial advantage.

Nick Pope made a crucial save by extending his foot to block Julian Alvarez's shot, preventing City from taking the lead.

However, after the break, the Magpies came back as a stronger team with the introduction of Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon and their increased intensity brought them back into the game.

Their persistence paid off when Joelinton made a run into Man City's box and then delivered the ball across the face of the goal, where Alexander Isak calmly controlled it and tapped it home from close range.

In an attempt to respond, Pep Guardiola brought on Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku in the 68th minute, followed by Phil Foden six minutes later.

Although Nunes had a one-on-one opportunity thwarted by Tino Livramento's last-ditch tackle, the substitutions couldn't produce the desired impact.

In the 90th minute, Rico Lewis came close to level, narrowly missing the target with a powerful shot, which turned out to be Manchester City's final chance of the match.

After their  exit from the Carabao Cup, Manchester City will shift their focus to the Premier League clash with Wolves on Saturday. Meanwhile, Newcastle will aim to secure their third consecutive victory in all competitions when they face Burnley at St. James' Park.
