Leandro Trossard’s 84th-minute goal completed Arsenal’s comeback from 2-0 down to earn a point at Stamford Bridge.
For the longest part of the game, it looked like the Gunner’s unbeaten start to the season was under threat.
Early on in the game, referee Chris Kavanagh was called to the VAR monitor to check a possible handball by William Saliba.
The French defender’s left arm was in the air as he challenged for a header with Mykhaylo Mudryk with the ball bouncing off. After initially waving away the decision Kavanagh later pointed to the spot after a review.
Cole Palmer beat Raheem Sterling to the honours of taking the penalty and then beat David Raya to put the home side 1-0 up in the 15th minute.
If Mudryk meant to lob Raya from the side left position then it was a piece of genius from the Ukrainian but if it was a cross then he simply got lucky. Either way, Mudryk’s cross/shot from the left floated over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Arsenal were back in the game in the 77th minute with their first shot on target.
Robert Sánchez will have to take the blame for this as his pass out from the back fell to Declan Rice. It wasn’t the easiest of efforts for the midfielder to take from about 35 yards out but his effort was precise and nestled into the net with the Chelsea goalkeeper backtracking.
Seven minutes later and suddenly Mikel Arteta’s side had equalised. Chelsea didn’t clear their lines well allowing Arsenal to recycle possession that resulted in Bukayo Saka whipping in a ball for Leo Trossard to place into the back of the net from close range and level the score.
There was still plenty of time left to play but neither side could find a winner. For Chelsea, this draw will feel almost like a defeat considering how comfortable they looked for three-quarters of the match. Meanwhile, this draw will boost Arsenal spirits further.
