Diogo Dalot’s sweet strike gave Manchester United a hard-fought win against a spirited Sheffield United in South Yorkshire.
The game began with a tribute to the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton who died earlier today at the age of 88 with the visiting fans singing the England great’s name throughout much of the game.
It was the home side who started the better of the two teams with Cameron Archer having two good early chances.
However, it was the Manchester team who took the lead against the run of play through a player who is now used to scoring.
Scott McTominay did well to hold off a challenge and control a flicked ball from Bruno Fernandes before finding the back of the net via a brief deflection to put his side 1-0 up in the 28th minute.
But McTominay then gave away the penalty that put Sheffield United level. The Scotland international’s outstretched left arm stopped a cross giving Michael Oliver no choice but to point to the spot.
After a lengthy VAR review to confirm the on-field decision, Oli McBurnie stepped up to make it 1-1 in the 34th minute.
That equaliser seemed to wake Erik ten Hag’s team up and they were much improved after a sleepy start. Bruno Fernandes had a freekick that hit the bar while Ramus Hojlund forced a smart stop from Wes Foderingham.
That pattern continued in the second half with Marcus Rashford having a superb chance to put his team ahead shortly before the hour mark.
United were ramping up the pressure and hit the woodwork for a second time in the game when Sofyan Amrabat’s effort bounced off the bar.
The winning goal eventually arrived in the 77th minute and it was a rare strike from Diogo Dalot. The right-back was in a central position on the edge of the area when he was able to line up a curling effort that Foderingham could only push into the net – the Blades’ goalkeeper may feel he could have done better.
After a good start to the game, Sheffield United struggled to push for an equaliser with Manchester United instead making it a second league win in a row.
