Newcastle United's hopes in the Champions League and European competitions were shattered on Wednesday night, succumbing to a 2-1 home defeat against Milan.
Despite hoping for a favour from Borussia Dortmund against PSG in the other group match, the Magpies knew that winning against Milan was essential for their chances of qualifying to the Last 16.
Their first clear opportunity came at the 20-minute mark when Joelinton's shot was cleared off the line by Fikayo Tomori.
Joelinton eventually broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a powerful strike, igniting St James' Park.
Milan improved in the second half, equalising through former Chelsea Christian Pulisic after a corner kick routine.
Bruno Guimaraes was close to restore Newcastle's lead as his impressive attempt hit the crossbar.
Shortly after, Rafael Leao almost scored for the visitors, after going through one-on-one with Martin Dubravka, but his shot struck the post.
The hosts were caught on the counter, and substitute Samuel Chukwueze curled a wonderful strike beyond Dubravka six minutes from time to put his side in front for the first time.
Despite a decent display from the Magpies, the defeat knocked them from European competitions, while Milan secured third place and a spot in the Europa League with the victory.
