Roma reached the UEFA Europa League's Last 16 after overcoming Feyenoord in a penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico during the second leg of their play-off clash.
Feyenoord took an early lead in the fifth minute when Quilindschy Hartman delivered a low cross to the back post. The ball deflected to Santiago Gimenez, who adeptly headed it into the net.
The hosts responded ten minutes later, with Stephan el Shaaraway cutting inside and delivering a pass to Lorenzo Pellegrini and his well-struck effort from the edge of the area found the far corner, levelling the score.
Similar to their past encounters last season, chances were few in the second half, leading the game into extra time.
Although Feyenoord dominated the first half of extra time, they failed to create meaningful opportunities, resulting in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes.
The Italian side won in the penalty shootout, securing a 4-2 win on spot kicks. Goalkeeper Mile Svilar played a crucial role by saving shots from David Hancko and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, despite an unexpected miss from Romelu Lukaku.
This is the third occasion in the last five years that Roma has overcome Feyenoord in European competitions.
