Mikel Arteta picked up his second trophy in eight months as Arsenal boss, as a Rhian Brewster shootout miss handed the Gunners the Community Shield after a 1-1 draw at full time.
After 10 minutes of sparring, it was Arsenal who made the game’s breakthrough, when Bukayo Saka floated a pass over to the left hand side with Liverpool youngster Neco Williams isolated against Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, who cut inside and thumped a wonder strike past Alisson Becker for the opener.
Arsenal, who struggled massively against top six sides under previous management, contained the Premier League champions with ease until the break, but Liverpool grew back into the game in the second-half, with Emiliano Martinez twice denying Sadio Mane from point blank range.
But with just over 15 minutes to go, it was an intriguing source who got Liverpool back into the game, as Mohamed Salah swept into the box and exchanged passes with substitute Takumi Minamino who calmly slotted past Martinez for his first goal in a red shirt.
Arsenal managed to hold off a Liverpool side for the remainder of the 90 minutes, and an incredibly high-quality shoot-out was decided by Rhian Brewster, who fired his first kick of the game onto the crossbar.
Aubameyang made it 5-4 with the final penalty, and amid strong speculation of a contract extension, the Arsenal captain lifted his second trophy in two games to ensure the Arteta era continued where it left off.
