Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of defender Gabriel Paulista on a free transfer, following his departure from Valencia earlier this morning.
It had been announced earlier today that Gabriel and Valencia had to decided to mutually terminate his contract before then signing a six-month contract with Atletico until the end of this season.
The 33-year-old centre-back has played 12 times so far this season after becoming a bit-part player due to injuries a couple of years ago, struggling to be an out and out regular starter since the 2020/21 campaign.
Gabriel began his professional career in Brazil with Vitoria, spending three and a half seasons with the club, helping them gain promotion to the top-flight in 2012.
He joined Villarreal in the summer of 2013 but only stayed with the Yellow Submarine for 18 months, making 37 appearances, before moving to the Premier League with Arsenal. He joined The Gunners for a fee of around £11.3 million in January 2015.
With Arsenal, he played 64 matches across all competitions over the course of two years, winning two FA Cup trophies and a Community Shield.
Since returning to Valencia in 2017, he has scored eight goals in 213 appearances, helping them win the 2018/19 Copa del Rey but, as mentioned, has become a rotation player.
He becomes Atletico’s second signing of the January transfer window after the arrival of Arthur Vermeeren for around £21.5 million from Royal Antwerp last week.
