Blackburn’s Ben Brereton continued his extraordinary journey from the Championship to the Copa America, netting the matchwinner in his first start for Chile during last night’s 1-0 win over Bolivia.
Stoke-on-Trent-born Brereton’s call up to the Chile squad was seen as a huge surprise, with the former England youth international qualifying for selection due to his mother being born in Chile.
Brereton has been sporting the name Diaz on his jersey, his mother’s maiden name, as is the Spanish custom, and after making his debut as a substitute in a 1-1 draw with Argentina, he managed an impressive winner against Bolivia last night.
