Sheffield United and Luton Town booked their places in the play-offs on the final day of the season.
The Blades ran out 4-0 winners over runaway champions Fulham, who may still have been feeling the after-effects of their title celebrations. Morgan Gibbs-White opened the scoring after just ten minutes with Iliman Ndiaye, Sander Berge, and Enda Stevens confirming a fifth-placed finish for the Blades.
Meanwhile, the Hatters booked sixth place and a play-off place with a 1-0 win over Reading. Harry Cornick took advantage of a sleeping Orjan Nyland to score the winner just before the first half.
Nottingham Forest looked set to finish third with a dramatic 1-0 win over Hull City in stoppage time until Keane Lewis-Potter grabbed an even later equaliser for the Tigers. Huddersfield Town’s 2-0 victory over Bristol City allowed them to leapfrog Forest on the last day.
Middlesbrough had a chance to make it to the play-offs had either Sheffield United or Luton Town slipped up. It wouldn’t have mattered if either of those two did lose though, as Boro lost 4-1 away to Preston North End and finished the game with a man down – Chris Wilder’s team will have to wait until next season.
