EFL round-up: Leicester back on top

It's been a pivotal weekend in the EFL with a dramatic day at the top of the Championship while Carlisle United's relegation from League One was confirmed.

There's so much going on in  'the 72' that it's hard to keep up but Playmaker is here to have a look over the weekend's key events.

      Championship

It was a dramatic day as the brilliant tussle between the top three took another twist. Ipswich Town went into the weekend on top but lost in the early kick-off away to Norwich City in the East Anglian derby. Marcelino Núñez scored the only goal of the break just five minutes before half-time.

That result will have egged Leicester City and Leeds United on but for a while, it looked like both teams could have dropped points.

The Whites did fall to a defeat in their game, losing 2-1 away to play-off hopefuls Coventry City who were fired up for this one. Ellis Simms scored his sixth goal in four games to give the Sky Blues the lead before another in-form man Haji Wright made it 2-0 early into the second period.

Substitute Joël Piroe did give Leeds some hope when he pulled one back in the 76th minute but instead, Daniel Farke's team fell to a damaging defeat.

Leicester City had taken the lead at home to Birmingham City with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall getting on the scoresheet again.

Jay Stansfield pulled one back for the visitors though and it looked like Leicester were going to have to settle for a draw until late in the game when Stephy Mavididi grabbed the winner.

Leicester City now go top of the table, one point ahead of Ipswich and two ahead of Leeds United.

      Championship final scores:

      Norwich City 1-0 Ipswich Town
Stoke City 2-2 West Bromwich Albion
      Sunderland 0-0 Bristol City
      Watford 0-0 Preston North End
Queens Park Rangers 0-2 Sheffield Wednesday
      Middlesbrough 2-0 Swansea City
      Cardiff City 1-3 Hull City
      Coventry City 2-1 Leeds United
      Huddersfield Town 1-0 Millwall
      Leicester City 2-1 Birmingham City
      Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Southampton

      League One

Carlisle United's stay in League One has been a short one after their relegation was confirmed. The Cumbrians' 2-0 defeat away to another promoted team, Northampton Town, meant that they will be competing in League Two again next season.

Kieron Bowie opened the scoring after just over half an hour before Ali Koiki scored late to confirm the win for Northampton and send Carlisle down.

At the top of the table, Portsmouth took the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table to eight points with a 3-1 win over Shrewsbury Town. Colby Bishop scored a brace in that game taking his tally up to an even 20 for this season now.

With second-place Derby County not playing this weekend, Bolton Wanderers were also able to move within a point of the Rams after a 2-0 win away to Bristol Rovers. After bagging a hat-trick against Reading last time out, Aaron Collins got on the scoresheet once again with Aaron Morley confirming the win with a late penalty.

      League One final scores:

      Northampton Town 2-0 Carlisle United
      Leyton Orient 3-1 Cheltenham Town
      Portsmouth 3-1 Shrewsbury Town
      Reading 1-1 Lincoln City
      Wigan Athletic 0-0 Port Vale
      Exeter City 1-0 Stevenage
      Charlton Athletic 2-1 Barnsley
      Blackpool 1-0 Cambridge United
      Bristol Rovers 0-2 Bolton Wanderers
      Burton Albion 0-4 Oxford United

      League Two

Crawley Town enjoyed a big victory on the road as they defeated title-chasing Mansfield 4-1.

Kellan Gordon opened the scoring for the Red Devils inside five minutes with Nicholas Tsaroulla making it 2-0 by half-time.

Two goals in the space of two minutes by Danilo Orsi and Klaidi Lolos made it 4-0 for the visitors before Hiram Boateng scored a late consolation for the Stags.

Elsewhere, the bottom three in the table all lost to the teams who now make up the top three as it stands with Stockport County, Wrexham, and MK Dons defeating Sutton United, Colchester United, and Forest Green Rovers.

      League Two final scores:

      Morecambe 0-3 Doncaster Rovers
      Mansfield Town 1-4 Crawley Town
      Notts County 3-0 Harrogate Town
      Sutton United 1-3 Stockport County
      Tranmere Rovers 1-3 Walsall
      Grimsby Town 1-0 Newport County
Forest Green Rovers 0-2 MK Dons
      Accrington Stanley 0-0 Crewe Alexandra
      Barrow 0-2 Swindon Town
      Bradford City 1-0 Gillingham
      Colchester United 1-2 Wrexham
      Wimbledon 1-0 Salford City

As a football fan, I can't believe the ups and downs in the EFL this weekend! The Championship race is getting more intense with every game. Congrats to Norwich for their win over Ipswich and well done to Coventry for their victory against Leeds.

The Foxes on the other hand were held to a goalless draw by Birmingham City, leaving all three teams tied on points and goal difference at the top.

Wow, what a weekend in the EFL! The Championship was full of surprises with Ipswich losing to Norwich in the derby. Congrats to Norwich for the win! And kudos to Coventry for beating Leeds. Can't wait to see who comes out on top in this tight race for promotion.
