Atlanta United forward Giorgos Giakoumakis has been named MLS Newcomer of the Year, beating Lionel Messi and Eduard Löwen to the award.
Giakoumakis joined Atlanta United from Celtic in February 2023 before making his debut in March. Since then the Greek forward has been prolific in the MLS.
The 28-year-old has featured 28 times for his new club in the league, scoring 17 times in the process with only LAFC’s Denis Bouanga scoring more in the regular season (20).
Voting for the Newcomer of the Year award is split into three categories with results coming from fellow players, clubs, and the media.
Interestingly, Lionel Messi won the player’s vote with 35.54% in total, just ahead of Giakoumakis who had 34.34% of the vote.
However, Giakoumakis topped the voting from the clubs (46.43%) and the media (56.65%) to lead the total vote with 45.78% ahead of Messi at 27.28% and finally Löwen with 15.44%.
This is the third time since 2017 that an Atlanta United player has won the Newcomer Award with Miguel Almirón winning in 2017 and Thiago Almada earning the award last season.
