World champions in 2014, not a lot has gone right for Germany and Joachim Löw since their 2018 World Cup debacle.

Defeats to Spain and more recently Macedonia stand out, and the impression has been that Germany are a collection of individuals rather than a unit. With former legends now back in the fold, can Löw and co write a glorious final chapter to secure their coach's legacy?

Der Mannschaft have a tough clash against France in their opening Group F game tonight, and here's all you need to know about Germany ahead of the contest. For an in-depth look at all 24 nations competing this summer, please check out our Euro 2020 guide!

The coach

It was no surprise that the DFB announced their decision to part ways with Löw at the end of this tournament.

He has been in the job for a long time and his stock has plummeted in recent years. After sensationally axing Thomas Müller, Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels in 2019, Löw has done an embarrassing U-turn and reinstated Müller and Hummels here.

Such a huge climbdown is not a good look for him, but swallowing his pride could potentially pay off.

Key Man

Back in from the international wilderness, Mats Hummels has a huge role to play at these Euros.

Germany's defence has been their Achilles heel in recent years, and the Dortmund centre-back could finally get them back on track.

He's coming off a good season with Dortmund, and his leadership and experience could prove crucial as Germany look to escape the dreaded 'Group of Death'.

One to Watch

After Mahmoud Dahoud's surprise exclusion from the squad, Christian Günter is worth keeping an eye on.

He's not an obvious choice, but with Germany’s lack of depth at full-back, he could well have a role to play. The Freiburg man is not only a dynamic threat going forward, but also a solid defender.

He is full of running and could be a good option for Germany this summer.

Fan's View

Playmaker asked Tushar Bahl @BVBBuzz to give us his perspective on the Germans ahead of Euro 2020:

"I don’t think a lot of Germany fans are expecting the team to go too far in the tournament this summer.

"The inclusions of Thomas Müller and Mats Hummels give the team some much needed experience and leadership, but there are just too many holes in the line-up, and Löw appears to have outstayed his welcome.

"Maybe Germany will shock us all and make a deep run into the tournament...but I doubt it."
