In the press conference prior to Manchester City's game against Brighton, Pep Guardiola suggested that Lionel Messi should have a dedicated Ballon d'Or category just for himself as he expresses his desire for Erling Haaland to win the award.
Haaland was responsible for netting 52 goals for Manchester City in the previous season, which led to their conquest of the Premier League, the FA Cup, and their first-ever Champions League victory, marking a remarkable treble.
Such a prolific performance would make Haaland a clear frontrunner for the Ballon d'Or award. Nonetheless, Messi's exceptional contributions in guiding Argentina to World Cup victory have made him the frontrunner for the award.
Speaking about the Ballon D'Or shortlist, Pep Guardiola said: "The Ballon D’Or should be two sections. One for Messi, and one for the other players. Haaland should win, yes.
"But of course, you tell me the worst Messi season? That’s the best for the rest of the players. Both deserve it, what can I say?
"Egotistically I would say Erling because he helped us achieve what we achieved. But if Leo wins, they won the World Cup.
"It’s nice so many players from Man City will be there for the first time in many years and challenging. That makes us so proud."
