Erling Haaland continues to break records at a blistering pace with his sensational start to life in the Premier League.
The Norwegian scored twice against Leeds United, the city he was born in, during Manchester City’s 3-1 victory last night.
That brace took Haaland up to 20 league goals for the season (and 26 in all competitions) after just 14 games. That’s already one record for the player to reach 20 goals in a Premier League season the quickest. Kevin Phillips hit 20 goals in his first 21 games during the 1999/2000 season for Sunderland. But City’s striker has already done it after just 14 games played.
Of course, it helps that Haaland is surrounded by some of the most gifted creative players in the world compared to what was a decent Black Cats side then managed by Peter Reid. But Haaland always seems to pop up exactly when it was needed.
But Haaland won’t be satisfied with that, certainly not when he has 20 games remaining in which to score just 15 league goals (something that seems easy for him) will make him the all-time highest scorer in a Premier League season. Andy Cole and Alan Shearer currently tie for the most ever PL goals in one campaign with 34 (in 93/94 and 94/95 respectively).
However, in the opening three years of the Premier League, there were 42 games instead of the 38 it has been since then. In that case, Mohamed Salah's 17/18 tally of 32 for Liverpool is the target.
It’s hard to imagine it not happening and brand new target being created for the future.
