Erling Haaland is closing in on the Premier League goal-scoring record after his brace in Man City's 3-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday.
The Norwegian bagged two goals in a comfortable afternoon's work for the Citizens, their manager Pep Guardiola opting to withdraw Haaland at half-time to keep him fresh for this week's Champions League quarter final second-leg against Bayern Munich.
After a penalty and a cool trademark finish, the rangy goal machine is on the verge of ripping up the top flight's record books - his double against the Foxes moving him onto 32 goals in 28 games this season, just two shy of the 34 goals hit by Andy Cole in 1993/94 and Alan Shearer in 1994/95.
What will make Haaland's achievement even more admirable if he beats the current benchmark is that both Cole and Shearer's totals were set during a 42-game season.
As it is, 22-year-old Haaland today matched the best-ever total amassed during a 38-game campaign in the Premier League; the Norwegian now level with Mo Salah, who hit 32 goals in 2017/18 for Liverpool.
Should Haaland, as is very likely, break the Premier League record, he does have another record on the horizon to aim for.
The all-time goalscoring record in the English top flight stands at 60 goals, set by Everton striker Dixie Dean back in 1927/28.
