Ciro Immobile's penalty gave Lazio a one-goal advantage after victory over 10-man Bayern Munich in Rome.
It's been a difficult week for Bayern after losing to title rivals Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 at the weekend and this will give manager Thomas Tuchel an even bigger headache.
It could have been a very different evening had Harry Kane converted an early effort from close range but the England captain couldn't quite wrap his foot around it.
That would prove to be the story for much of the game: when Bayern did manage to create chances against a Lazio team (who were putting pressure on them at all times) they were off-target.
In fact, the Bavarian team had 17 efforts in total with not a single one of them hitting the target.
Lazio grew in confidence during the game while the likes of Jamal Musiala and Saido Mané struggled to make their chances pay.
A quick counter-attack saw Gustav Isaksen in space inside the Bayern area. Dayot Upamecano made the challenge but it was a dangerous one that resulted in French referee François Letexier pointing to the spot and giving a straight red to the defender. Upamecano will now miss the second leg in March.
Ciro Immobile stepped up to take the spot kick and send Manuel Neuer the wrong way to put Maurizio Sarri's side in the lead.
Being down to ten men made it even harder for Bayern to try and create chances – something they will have to do in the second leg to progress to the quarter-finals.
