Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been charged with 232 alleged breaches of betting rules by the Football Association.
The FA claim that the breaches were made between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021 in violation of Rule E8 which states that “a participant shall not use any information relating to football which the Participant has obtained by virtue of his or her position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time for or in relation to betting.”
Toney’s club Brentford also issued a statement about the charge: “Brentford FC has been informed that Ivan Toney has been charged with breaches of FA Rule E8.
The Club has been in discussion with Ivan and his legal representatives about this matter and those conversations will continue privately.
We will make no further comment until the matter has been completed.”
Speculation will mount that the charge will have been a factor in Toney not making the England squad for the World Cup. The in-form striker scored twice in Brentford’s final game before the break in a 2-1 over Manchester City at the Etihad.
