It’s the final round of the regular MLS season this weekend with several qualification spots for the play-offs still up for grabs.
We already know that the likes of Inter Miami and LA Galaxy won’t be in the MLS Cup play-offs but there are still teams in with a chance.
Let’s see what can happen...
Eliminated: DC United, Inter Miami, Toronto
Can still qualify: CF Montréal, NY Red Bulls, Chicago Fire, Charlotte FC, New York City
Managerless DC United have to suffer the frustration of going into the final game in a wildcard spot but knowing that no matter what happens they will miss out on the play-offs.
That means there are five teams competing for just two wildcard spots with all the qualifying round slots already taken with only the overall seeding position left to determine.
Montréal begin in the best position for a wildcard spot with 41 points and can book their place with a win away to Columbus Crew.
New York City FC have the slimmest chance of making the play-offs. The Boys in Blue must win against Chicago Fire and hope that results go elsewhere.
Finally, the Red Bulls will be looking to get a victory away to Nashville and Charlotte need a positive result against the already-eliminated Inter Miami.
Qualified: St. Louis, LAFC, Seattle Sounders, Houston Dynamo, Real Salt Lake, Vancouver Whitecaps
Eliminated: Austin FC, LA Galaxy, Colorado Rapids
Can still qualify: Portland Timbers, FC Dallas, San Jose Earthquakes, Sporting KC, Minnesota United
Five teams are competing for three spots in the Western Conference. One qualifying spot remains, currently occupied by Portland Timbers on 43 points who are only ahead of the next two teams due to their number of wins (11) – one more than FC Dallas and the Earthquakes.
A win for the Timbers at home to Houston Dynamo will be enough for them to guarantee a qualifying place – although it won’t be easy.
Meanwhile, FC Dallas and San Jose Earthquakes will both be playing teams that already know that they won’t be in the play-offs.
The Toros will be travelling to take on LA Galaxy while the Quakes welcome Austin FC.
To add even more excitement Sporting Kansas City and Minnesota United are both on 41 points and will be facing each other in Kansas.
Don’t worry if you miss any of the action though, Playmaker will be here on Monday to give you a full run down before the wildcard round begins next week.
