Nigel Adkins has been named the new manager of Charlton Athletic, with the club moving swiftly to fill the vacancy after Lee Bowyer’s shock departure on Monday.
The Addicks had been left in a tough position when Bowyer opted to step aside in order to take the Birmingham City job, but have reassured their supporters by quickly bringing in the highly-rated coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal.
Adkins, a former physio turned manager, achieved huge success with Southampton, taking the side from League One to the Premier League, following a stint where he promoted Scunthorpe from the fourth tier to the third.
The 56-year-old has since been unable to match those heights at Reading, Sheffield United and Hull, but returns hoping to make another promotion push.
Adkins said: “It’s a really exciting opportunity for me – something that has happened very quickly. I’m really pleased to be here and am looking forward to meeting the players and getting started.
“I had a conversation with Thomas [Sandgaard] and he highlighted where he wants this club to go. It’s an exciting and long-term vision. Getting to the Premier League is something that we all want and something that I have done before. I want to achieve that again.
“The team got a great result on Tuesday night and now we need to keep driving on together, because we have got a chance of winning promotion this season.”
Charlton currently sit sixth in League One, in the play-off places and 10 points from automatic promotion.
