Michael Olise scored a spectacular late free-kick to earn Crystal Palace a hard-fought point at home to Manchester United.
Action: Manchester United came into this one in the best possible form with nine wins on the bounce and had much of the ball for the first half against a stubborn Palace side.
However, there were few chances Antony had a lob go just wide and the debuting Wout Weghorst had a header off target.
With 40 minutes gone, David de Gea was called into action to produce an excellent diving save to deny Odsonne Édouard what would have been an impressive goal.
Bruno Fernandes did open the scoring for the visitors. Marcus Rashford played Christian Eriksen in behind a sleeping Palace defence. The Dane managed to pull the ball back for Fernandes to take a touch and hammer the ball past Vicente Guaita.
The game did produce one controversial moment when Scott McTominay was brought down in the box by Chris Richards. Referee John Brooks didn’t think so and VAR didn’t intervene.
De Gea was forced into another save as Palace started to increase the pressure. A corner from the left found Marc Guéhi whose header was punched away by the United goalkeeper.
One question mark hanging over Erik ten Hag’s team selection was whether Casemiro would start considering that the Brazilian was on a yellow card. Casemiro did start and eventually did pick up a yellow card with just 10 minutes remaining when he brought down Wilfried Zaha, it was an obvious decision that put the player out of this weekend’s clash with Arsenal.
With just over 90 minutes gone, Luke Shaw brought down Jeffrey Schlupp just on the edge of the area. Step forward Michael Olise who sent in a thunderous effort over the wall and just under the bar to seal a late leveller for Patrick Vieira’s team.
Big Picture: This result takes away some of the feel-good feeling at Manchester United after last weekend’s derby win. Losing two points from a winning position and Casemiro for the weekend’s clash with Arsenal will give Erik ten Hag some food for thought.
Palace meanwhile will be happy they got the point their second-half performance deserved. There is still a lack of a quality finisher but Olise’s goal was well worth the price of admission alone.
