Power rankings: Millers record seventh win in a row

This week’s Power Rankings are so competitive that even the Club World Cup champions can’t displace the mighty Rotherham United. But Liverpool do manage to hit the same level as the Millers with yet another win...

      10th, MK Dons

      Last 5: WWWDD

It was a frustrating weekend for MK Dons in League One, who couldn’t find a way past Ipswich Town at Stadium MK. Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton had a particularly fine game to keep Scott Twine and co out.

But Liam Manning’s team have the chance to make their play-off place more comfortable – and keep an outside chance of catching up to Wigan Athletic – when they travel to Sunderland on Saturday.

      9th, Mansfield Town

      Last 5: WWDWD

There were a lot of draws in matchday 32 of League Two with only five wins in total. The Stags had a tough time at the Memorial Stadium against Bristol Rovers, only managing a goalless draw.

But that does mean that Mansfield have still only lost one league game since November and are just three points behind an automatic promotion play-off spot with a game in hand over Northampton Town.

Nigel Clough’s team do have another difficult away trip next weekend when they travel to face Newport County.

      8th, Forest Green Rovers

      Last 5: WDWWD

Despite being held to a draw away to Sutton United, Forest Green Rovers actually extended their lead at the top of League Two to 11 points after Tranmere Rovers lost away to Walsall. With Jamille Matt and Matty Stevens having a rare game without getting on the scoresheet, defender Kane Wilson was the one who gave Forest Green the equaliser after Sutton took the lead through Kenny Davis.

Forest Green have the chance to make it 20 league games in a row undefeated should they avoid defeat at home to Walsall next weekend.

      7th, Sheffield United

      Last 5: WWWWD

The Blades had a tough game away to Huddersfield Town with neither side managing to find the breakthrough. That point did move Sheffield United up to eighth place in the Championship table, just three points off the play-off spots.

Since Paul Heckingbottom took over at Sheffield they’ve had an impressive record in the league with seven wins, two draws, and just a single defeat in their first ten games under their new manager.

      6th, Bolton Wanderers

      Last 5: WWDWW

Could Bolton make it into the play-offs? It seemed pretty unlikely a month ago when Wanderers were languishing in 18th place. But now, after six wins and a draw in their last seven games, the Trotters are up to 10th place and just eight points away from a play-off place. It’s a big gap but with that kind of form they might just sneak in.

Last weekend saw another important late goal for Bolton and it was Amadou Bakayoko once again providing it to get an impressive result away to Oxford United. We’ll see if Ian Evatt’s team can keep up their impressive run when they travel to face Burton Albion next.

      =4th, Manchester City

      Last 5: WDWWW

No one expected Norwich City to bother Pep Guardiola’s winning machine and they didn’t. Raheem Stirling gave a fine performance and picked up a hat-trick against the Canaries. It was a game comfortable enough for Guardiola to give some game time to youngsters James McAtee, Liam Delap, and Kayky before City return to Champions League football on Tuesday against Sporting.

Indeed, the last time City lost a game was in the Champions League back in December against RB Leipzig. The Citizens have won 11 of their 12 games in all competitions since then.

      =4th, Exeter City

      Last 5: WDWWW

The Grecians lost every single game in December but since the new year have started to improve, moving from 8th position up to 4th in the table. After a run of five wins in their last six games, Matt Taylor’s team are now just five points behind second-placed Tranmere Rovers and with two games in hand.

Kieran Phillips was the hero for Exeter last weekend. The 21-year old on-loan forward scored the winning goal away to Bradford City just before half-time.

      3rd, Chelsea

      Last 5: DWWWW

Chelsea have made hard work of their last three (very varied) opponents: Plymouth Argyle, Al Hilal, and Palmeiras with narrow wins in each game. Of course, Plymouth are the odd one out there – they didn’t make it into this year’s Club World Cup that saw Thomas Tuchel’s team crowned world champions after Kai Havertz extra-time penalty and César Azpilicueta’s clever diversion tactic.

The Blues return to domestic action this Saturday at Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace.

      =1st, Liverpool

      Last 5: WWWWW

It’s never fun to travel to Turf Moor – especially in the conditions that Liverpool experienced against Burnley on Sunday. But Fabinho’s goal meant that Jürgen Klopp’s team took all three points and recorded their sixth successive victory in all competitions.

The title race is still very much on for Liverpool providing that City ever do drop points and the Premier League is once again become a race between two dominant teams. However, the Reds need to shift their focus this week when they return to Champions League action against Internazionale.

      =1st, Rotherham United

      Last 5: WWWWW

If you include penalty shootout victories, it’s seven wins in a row for Paul Warne’s team following their 2-0 win away to Sheffield Wednesday Rotherham are now nine points clear a the top of the League One table although second-place Wigan Athletic have played three fewer games.

The Millers have the chance to really cement their place at the top of the league on Friday night when they host the Latics. Win that and Rotherham United will go 12 points clear.
