The 2023/24 campaign gets underway this weekend and the excitement, as ever, is ramping up with the EFL season set to begin on Friday evening as Southampton, of the Premier League last season, go to newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.
There are 72 clubs with their own hopes and aspirations of creating some history over the next nine or so months and, as a result, we, at Playmaker Stats, are running through every club with a preview and a prediction... which you cannot hold us to!
Manager: Gary Rowett
Last season: 8th in the Championship
Transfers: see here.
The Lions were unfortunate not to make it into the play-offs last year however that is what happens if you win just two of your final nine games of the season. So while that 4-3 defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers may be a bruising memory of the 2022/23 campaign Millwall should have made their place in the top six certain by that point already.
What Gary Rowett can do now is channel that disappointment and frustration into the new campaign.
Millwall will be hoping to keep hold of Zian Flemming who proved to be such a key player last season with 15 goals and three assists in the Championship last season although a move to Burnley in the Premier League may prove irresistible if the club receive a satisfactory fee.
But it does look like Millwall have recruited well so far this summer with Rowett at last completing the signing of Kevin Nisbet from Hibernian after a January move for the player failed – the striker bagged 12 in 20 games for Hibs in the SPL last season. Elsewhere, Wes Harding and Joe Bryan reinforce in defence while Casper de Norre joins in midfield from OH Leuven.
An ideal 2023/24 season for Millwall will be to see their steady upward trajectory continue, the Lions have finished 11th, 9th, and 8th in the last three years – perhaps this time they won’t miss out on a play-off place.
