According to self-proclaimed football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Argentine manager Diego Simeone is set to sign a new contract with Atletico Madrid.
Simeone has been in charge of Los Rojiblancos since 2011 but looks set to extend that stay by signing a deal that will ensure he remains the highest paid manager in world football and keeps him contracted to the club until 2027.
It had appeared that Simeone would have left the club in the summer of 2023 after a period of stagnation since they won La Liga in 2021. However, performances and results massively improved after the 2022 FIFA World Cup last season with an evolution in their style to becoming more attacking.
Since joining Atletico after managerial stints with Racing Club twice, Estudiantes, River Plate, San Lorenzo and Catania, Simeone has been in charge of 638 matches with the Spanish club, winning 377 and suffering just 114 defeats.
In that time they have won two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, Supercopa de Espana, two UEFA Europa League’s, two UEFA Super Cups and they have reached the UEFA Champions League final on two occasions.
They defeated Real Sociedad by two goals to one on Sunday afternoon to continue their strong start to the season with just one defeat in ten matches across all competitions so far.
