Former Macclesfield Town manager Sol Campbell has agreed to take the reins at Southend United.
After signing a three-year deal until 2022, Campbell's first game in charge will be against title favourites Ipswich Town on October 26 with caretaker boss Gary Waddock overseeing Tuesday night's contest against Doncaster Rovers.
Former defender Hermann Hreidarsson and ex-Manchester United striker Andy Cole have joined Campbell's backroom team.
Southend have one league win this term and have been without a full-time boss since Kevin Bond left on 6 September.
They are eight points adrift from safety ahead of the weekend's Doncaster clash and Campbell has a real task on his hands trying to lift the club, who sit 22nd in the table, out of their current position.
Southend United are delighted to announce the appointment of Sol Campbell as the club's new first team manager.
