Tottenham Hotspur have sacked interim manager Cristian Stellini after Sunday’s 6-1 defeat away to Newcastle United.
Stellini was named interim manager following the departure of Antonio Conte having already taken charge of first-team duties during the former manager’s absence.
After being put in charge by owner Daniel Levy in late March, Stellini has overseen four games: a 1-1 draw away to Everton and a home win over Brighton followed by two defeats to Bournemouth and, significantly, Newcastle.
In a statement, Daniel Levy said: “Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable. It was devastating to see. We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the Board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine.
“Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time. We wish him and his staff well.”
Ryan Mason will once again take charge of Tottenham for their six remaining games beginning with the visit of Manchester United on Thursday evening.
