Huddersfield and Birmingham still in drop zone

Stoke safe, Owls on a roll...but Terriers doomed

Sheffield Wednesday's push to avoid relegation from the Championship built further momentum on Saturday as the Owls recorded a thumping 3-0 victory over play-off hopefuls West Brom at Hillsborough.

Anthony Musaba netted the first for Danny Rohl's side on 22 minutes and goals from Ike Ugbo and Josh Windass after the break made sure of a valuable three points.

The Owls are now 20th in the table, three points above the relegation zone, after a third win in their last five games.

Huddersfield, however, are all but resigned to League One football next season after a 1-1 draw at home to fellow strugglers Birmingham. Koji Miyoshi put the Blues ahead at the end of the first period, but Rhys Healey equalised for the hosts straight after the break.

Both teams desperately needed a win in their respective bids to beat the drop, but the Terriers are now effectively down given their goal difference and Birmingham need results to go their way on the final day if they are to dodge the trapdoor to the third tier.

Plymouth, meanwhile, did nothing to ease their relegation worries with a 1-0 defeat to Millwall at The Den. Lions defender Jake Cooper struck seven minutes from time to leave the Pilgrims - one point clear of the drop zone - looking over their shoulder.

Blackburn also remain in the battle at the bottom of the table after a 0-0 draw at home against Coventry City. Rovers may be kicking themselves as the final half an hour of the contest saw the visitors reduced to 10 men after the sending off of Liam Kitching for a professional foul on Sam Gallagher.

Stoke City, however, can breathe a huge sigh of relief after their 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Southampton secured their Championship status for another season. Tyrese Campbell scored the only goal of the game,; Russell Martin's hosts unable to find their way back into the contest and now mathematically unable to achieve automatic promotion.

The highest-scoring contest of the day came in south Wales, where Middlesbrough recorded a thumping 4-1 away win at Cardiff City.

Matt Clarke gave Boro the lead in the first-half, and further goals after the break from Finn Azaz, Emmanuel Latte Lath and Alex Gilbert inflicted Cardiff's heaviest home defeat of the season, even though Josh Bowler scored a consolation for the Bluebirds in injury-time.

In the other afternoon kick-offs, Bristol City beat already-relegated Rotherham 2-0 at home, while Norwich and Swansea drew 2-2 at Carrow Road. Watford, meanwhile, marked Tom Cleverley's first game since his appointment as manager with a 1-0 win over Sunderland.

Ipswich travel to Hull City for the day's late kick-off. The Tractor Boys need a win to take a massive step closer to the Premier League, while the Tigers will be desperate for three points as they target a play-off spot.
