Union Berlin earned their first ever point in the Champions League as they battled to a 1-1 draw against Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. on Wednesday.
In the early stages, the hosts controlled possession and created several scoring opportunities and they even managed to score, but Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa's goal was disallowed by VAR.
Anguissa managed to head the ball into the net from Giovanni Di Lorenzo's downward header at the half-hour mark, but a foul was called on the latter.
Napoli's persistent pressure paid off in the 39th minute when Matteo Politano demonstrated quick reflexes to convert Mario Rui's deflected cross into a goal.
The visitors, who had arrived in Italy on the back of 12 consecutive defeats, came close to levelling just before half-time, but Josip Juranovic's free-kick struck the post.
Napoli continued to control the game in the second half, but Union Berlin capitalised on a swift counter-attack.
A hopeful long pass found David Fofana, who drew defenders before passing the ball to Sheraldo Becker.
Becker's shot was well saved by Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, but Fofana was there to convert the rebound.
Napoli pushed for a winning goal, but resilient defending from Union secured them a point.
With this draw, Napoli now has seven points from four games, while Union Berlin opens their account in European competition.
Real Madrid currently leads Group C and will face Braga later on Wednesday.
