EFL matches to look out for

We have reached the final weekend of both League One and League Two with automatic promotion, playoff places and the relegation zone to be decided on Saturday. The Championship is into its penultimate match day with the second-tier absolutely electric at both ends of the table in what has been a magnificent and exciting campaign for the neutral.

This is our brief summary of one key standout fixture to keep a closer eye on from each of the three divisions in the EFL this weekend…

CHAMPIONSHIP

Hull City vs Ipswich Town | 8pm on Saturday

On Saturday evening, Hull City host automatic promotion chasing Ipswich Town with the visitors desperate for a much-needed three points. The Tigers did, though, just about keep their own promotion hopes alive in midweek as they defeated Coventry City by three goals to two in midweek to mean they are three points off the top six and the playoff places. They are now unbeaten in their last five matches. Promotion is in the visitors’ hands as they have a game-in-hand but they do have a tough run in. The Tractor Boys have enjoyed a magnificent campaign after promotion from League One last season. They are winless in three matches, though, as all of the top five stutter to the finish line.

LEAGUE ONE

Derby County vs Carlisle United | 12.30pm on Saturday

It has been a topsy turvy and turbulent automatic promotion race in League One but Derby County now have the simple job of confirming their ascension into the second-tier this weekend. If the Rams defeat bottom-of-the-table and already relegated Carlisle United by any margin at home on Saturday then they will be promoted back to the Championship. The only hope for chasing Bolton Wanderers, who have to defeat Peterborough United themselves and also hope for a four-goal swing, would be that Carlisle, despite finishing bottom, have won by three goals to one away at both third place Bolton and fourth place Peterborough earlier this season.

LEAGUE TWO

Barrow vs Mansfield Town | 3pm on Saturday

Under the management of Pete Wild, Barrow are still in the hunt for a top seven finish and a potential playoff spot. The Cumbrians come into this one, though, on the back of a real stutter towards the end of the campaign. Their 2-1 defeat at home to Bradford City in midweek means they begin the final day of the League Two season sitting just a point clear tucked inside the top seven. They now face a Mansfield Town side that have been magnificent throughout the campaign and have already confirmed their spot in the top three and automatic promotion. The Stags are still finishing the season well, though, even with promotion confirmed and they are currently on a four-match winning streak.
