Newcastle put five past West Ham

Newcastle United romped to victory away to West Ham United as Joelinton and Callum Wilson both bagged braces.

It didn’t take long for the in-form Magpies to take the lead in London. It began with a corner before Allan Saint-Maximin was able to find space to whip in a dangerous cross that Callum Wilson was able to head past Lukasz Fabianski. 

VAR had to intervene in the 12th minute when Joelinton went through on goal, rounded the goalkeeper, and passed the ball into an empty net. The assistant referee had initially raised the flag for offside when the Brazilian received the ball from Fabian Schär’s punt forward. Fortunately for Newcastle though, Emerson Palmieri had played Joelinton onside.

While West Ham were looking naive defensively, they were a threat going forward and they pulled a goal back five minutes before half-time when Kurt Zouma escaped his marker to head Jarrod Bowen’s cross into the net.

David Moyes then had to watch his team shoot themselves in the foot just after the break. Nayef Aguerd was caught on the ball by Jacob Murphy in front of his own goal, leaving the Newcastle man the simple job of laying the ball on a plate for Wilson to score his second. That goal now moves the 31-year-old up to 10 Premier League goals for the season.

West Ham were happy to give their opponents another gift when a long ball over the top aimed for substitute Alexander Isak was intercepted by the on-rushing Fabianski. However, the goalkeeper wasn’t able to control the ball leaving Isak to scoop the ball into the net and make it 4-1.

The Hammers’ defence was once again caught out with a long ball in the 90th minute. This time it was Bruno Guimarães launching it forward for Joelinton who had plenty of time to cut inside and score Newcastle’s fifth.

That result means Newcastle stay third while West Ham United are one of four teams level on 27 points. The Hammers need to concentrate a lot more to save their season.
