      Power rankings: The play-offs begin

The regular EFL season is done and dusted so we have just the Premier League and the play-offs to pick from in our Power Rankings but there’s still plenty to discuss.

Now, with that in mind do we have any surprises in our Power Rankings this week?

      10th, Coventry City

      Last 5: DWWDD

There’s still everything to play for in the second leg as the Sky Blues travel to the Riverside for a place in the play-off final. The first leg finished 0-0 just days after the two sides drew 1-1 on the final day of the season.

Once again we can expect a close game with Mark Robins hoping one of his star players like Gustavo Hamer or Viktor Gyökeres can make the difference.

And on a related note, Coventry City fans may also be interested to see who topped our ‘Playmaker 72’ this season…

      9th, Newcastle United

      Last 5: WWWLD

The Magpies just made it into the Power Rankings despite not winning their last two games with Eddie Howe’s team being held to a draw by Leeds United at the weekend.

However, before that Newcastle were on a run of eight wins out of their last nine games and the very fact that they’re in the rankings while Manchester United are absent means that their push for the top four is still on track.

Now there’s the visit of Brighton & Hove Albion on Thursday to look forward to next.

      8th, Bolton Wanderers

      Last 5: WLWWD

Dion Charles quickly cancelled out Nicky Cadden’s opener in the first leg of the League One play-off semi-finals at the weekend but the tie is still very much up for grabs.

Wanderers will now need to go to the Oakwell Ground on Friday to advance to the play-off final where they would probably be taking on Peterborough United. A repeat of Bolton’s last trip to Barnsley – a 3-0 win back in January – would do nicely for Ian Evatt’s team.

      7th, Brentford

      Last 5: DWWLW

Surprisingly, this is Brentford’s first appearance in the Power Rankings this season.

Thomas Frank’s team are still in the battle for European places boosted by their recent form that has seen them record wins over Chelsea, Liverpool, and most recently West Ham United.

The next game against Tottenham Hotspur then is a big one before they face a Manchester City side who will likely already be crowned champions by the final day of the season.

To add some extra intrigue for Brentford’s clash with Spurs, the North London club has been linked with a move to make the Bees’ manager their own for next season.

      6th, Peterborough United

      Last 5: WLDWW

Darren Ferguson’s team had a dream first leg against Sheffield Wednesday last Friday when they put four past the Owls at home. Goals from Jack Taylor, Joe Ward, Kwame Poku, and naturally Jonson Clarke-Harris have given the Posh a massive advantage going into the second leg on Thursday.

Of course, they can’t rest on their laurels just yet but you feel like they’ve got one foot in the play-off final which with our maths means they’ve got a half-foot in the Championship.

      5th, Sunderland

      Last 5: DWDWW

Luton Town may have taken an early lead through Elijah Adebayo last Saturday at the Stadium of Light but the Black Cats came roaring back.

Amad Diallo’s stunning free-kick put Tony Mowbray’s team level before Trai Hume gave Sunderland a one-goal advantage going into the second leg at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday evening.

The last Sunderland were there it finished 1-1, fans would readily accept a repeat of that result.

      4th, Sheffield Wednesday

      Last 5: WWWWL

Well, the ‘last 5’ doesn’t look too bad for the Owls until you realise just how heavy that loss was. Darren Moore’s team are going to need to produce something out-of-this-world to level the score with Peterborough in the second leg.

In an attempt to appease Wednesday fans, we will say that the Owls have scored five goals on three occasions already this season. It’s not done and dusted just yet.

      3rd, Salford City

      Last 5: WWWLW

It was a tight game between Salford and local rivals Stockport County on Saturday evening. Matt Smith won a catch-as-catch-can contest with defender Fraser Horsfall to score the only goal of the game early on.

When the two teams played each other at Edgeley Park at the end of March, Stockport took an early lead through Connor Evans with Callum Hendry equalising in the second period. A repeat of that will do for the Ammies.

      2nd, Manchester City

      Last 5: WWWDW

After Manchester City put three past Everton and Brighton defeated Arsenal on Sunday the title is just one win away for the Citizens.

Considering that Pep Guardiola’s team are unbeaten in 22 games in all competition and have won their last 11 league games in a row you feel like that will probably happen pretty soon.

However, City have the visit of Real Madrid to deal with first on Wednesday. Although you expect that the Manchester side will be favourites to progress to the final on home turf you can never count Madrid out on a big European night.

      1st, Liverpool

      Last 5: WWWWW

The Reds stay top of the Power Rankings despite not having played this week. Instead, they’ll be back after a nice, long break this evening as they travel to face Leicester City.

The Foxes are desperate for points as they look to stay in the top flight for another season so it will prove to be a difficult evening for Liverpool.

You’d back the visitors to take all three points though, especially considering that a win for Jürgen Klopp’s side would make it seven straight victories.
