Power rankings: Three teams share first place

With the regular EFL campaigns wrapped up now we’re almost coming to the end of the Power Rankings for another season.

But fear not, we’ve got a few more weeks yet with the final weeks of the Premier League to be played and the play-offs on the horizon.

This week we have three teams all tied in first place. First though, we’ll go through the rest of the top ten...

      10th, Huddersfield Town

      Last 5: LDWWW

Neil Warnock has done a stellar job since returning from retirement to guide the Terriers to safety when it looked like it could be a lost cause. Although surely an even bigger achievement for the 74-year-old is getting Huddersfield into the Power Rankings for the first time this season.

Since taking over at the club again, Warnock has overseen 16 games winning seven and drawing five. In contrast, Huddersfield had won just seven of their previous 30 games all season.

They finish the Championship season in 18th place.

      9th, Coventry City

      Last 5: WDWWD

The Sky Blues held their nerve at the Riverside Stadium to book their place in the play-offs after a 1-1 draw.

It’s a taster for Mark Robins’ team of what’s to come with the two sides facing off again in the play-offs. But with two of the best players in the division in Viktor Gyökeres and Gustavo Hamer (who scored Coventry’s goal against Boro), they have a fine chance of securing a Premier League return.

      8th, Sunderland

      Last 5: WDWDW

Joining Coventry in the play-offs are Sunderland who will be facing Luton Town after having just been promoted from League One last year via the play-offs.

The Black Cats were helped by Millwall who collapsed at home to Blackburn Rovers after being 3-1 before losing 4-3. Sunderland did their job comfortably though with a 3-0 win away to Preston North End that began with a peach of a goal from Amad Diallo before Alex Pritchard and Jack Clarke wrapped up the three points.

It’s been a remarkable season for Tony Mowbray’s young side.

      7th, Sheffield Wednesday

      Last 5: LWWWW

The Owls can count themselves unlucky not to be getting promoted to the Championship automatically despite picking up 96 points. Such is life when Plymouth and Ipswich Town have been so impressive.

But Darren Moore’s team can take confidence from their recent run of form that has seen them win their last four games including a victory over Derby County that sent the Rams out of the top six meaning that Peterborough United will be Wednesday’s play-off opponents.

      6th, Stevenage

      Last 5: WLWWW

The Boro wrapped up their season with a victory away to Barrow knowing that they had already secured their return to the third tier after nine seasons in League Two.

Jake Reeves scored the only goal of the game to secure the victory and give Stevenage their fifth win out of their last six games.

Now Steve Evans’ job is to get his team ready for the step up to League One.

      5th, Ipswich Town

      Last 5: WWWWD

The Tractor Boys’ draw on the final day of the season ensured that they wouldn’t be crowned champions – although with Plymouth Argyle winning that wasn’t going to happen anyway.

Still, it’s been a superb season for Kieran McKenna’s team who will go into the Championship confident after picking up 98 points, scoring over 100 league goals, and conceding just 35.

No one in the top flight has scored as many as Ipswich Town next season, the only shame is that they don’t get to lift a trophy at the end of it.

      4th, Swansea City

      Last 5: WWWDW

Swansea fans can take heart from their side’s final run-in that saw them eventually finish just three points off of a play-off place.

Joël Piroe scored a stoppage-time free-kick to give Russell Martin’s time a win over West Bromwich Albion, who were going into the final day of the Championship season with a shot of reaching the play-offs.

Martin will know exactly what to work on next year. Only Sheffield United and Burnley scored more league goals than the Swans next season but they also conceded just one fewer than rock-bottom Wigan Athletic. If they can fix it they can think about a potential promotion campaign next year.

      =1st, Plymouth Argyle

      Last 5: WWWWW

Steven Schumacher’s side romped to the League One title after winning their last six games in the third tier. It was also their ninth win out of the team’s last 10 league games.

Argyle may not have blown many opponents out of the water like Ipswich Town did but they crucially won more games than the Tractor Boys to end the season with a healthy tally of 101 points following 31 wins in 46 games.

Now they can enjoy the celebrations before rejoining the Championship for the first time since the 2009/10 season.

      =1st, Liverpool

      Last 5: WWWWW

Can the Reds pip Manchester United or even Newcastle United to a Champions League place? In this kind of form, it’s suddenly looking very possible.

Liverpool have won their last six games on the bounce and if they can extend that run to nine games by defeating Leicester City, Aston Villa, and Southampton in their final three then you wouldn’t rule out a remarkable turnaround for a team that looked like they might finish mid-table not too long ago.

It helps when you have someone like Mohamed Salah scoring 30 goals in a season for the third time in a row.

      =1st, Manchester City

      Last 5: WWWWW

Pep Guardiola managed to get the better of Sam Allardyce’s Leeds United on Saturday despite a late scare after Ilkay Gundogan missed the chance to bag a hat-trick and kill off the game from the penalty spot.

Still, it never really seemed like the Citizens were capable of anything else other than a win after having also won their last 10 league games. Arsenal have had a fine season but really no other team can match that kind of irresistible form.

At this stage, you feel it’s more a question of how many trophies City will win this year. We may get a good insight into that tonight as City face Real Madrid at the Bernabéu.
