Manchester City's title-winning Premier League campaign ended with a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Pep Guardiola made many changes to his starting lineup as he looked ahead to the FA Cup and Champions League finals.
City came close to taking the lead in the opening minutes when Cole Palmer skillfully evaded Ethan Pinnock and Zanka Jorgensen before unleashing a shot from 18 yards, but David Raya made a fine save to deny him.
Brentford had their own opportunities in the frantic early stages, with Yoane Wissa striking the post after cutting inside from the left channel. However, an offside flag was raised to nullify the chance.
Shortly after the second half began, Brentford had strong claims for two penalties in quick succession. Ben Mee was clipped by Sergio Gomez while attacking a loose ball from a free-kick, and Rico Lewis appeared to block a cutback from Mee with his arm. However, the Bees' appeals were dismissed on both occasions.
After a lengthy second half of attempting but mostly failing to break down City's defense, Brentford finally found the breakthrough in the final five minutes.
Kevin Schade raced past Sergio Gomez and delivered a cross for Bryan Mbeumo, who headed the ball back across the goal, and Ethan Pinnock smashed it into the net.
With stoppage time approaching, Palmer had three quick chances to equalize, but was denied on all occasions. Pinnock blocked his first two close-range shots before Raya got back up to save his final attempt.
Brentford held on during the five minutes of added time, finishing the season with 59 points, while champions City ended with 89 points.
With this result, the Bees fulfilled their role on the last day of the season and became the only team to achieve a double over City this year. However, their hopes of securing a spot in the Europa Conference League were dashed due to results elsewhere.
