North London clubs knocked out of Carabao Cup

Arsenal and Tottenham were knocked out of the Carabao Cup this evening. Goals from Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard saw Nottingham Forest overcome Tottenham 2-0 at the City Ground, while Arsenal were dumped by Brighton & Hove Albion as the Seagulls came from behind to beat the Gunners 3-1 at the Emirates Stadium.

The first half ended goalless at the City Ground, but two early second-half goals from Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard set Forest for the victory.

Despite having to play out the last 14 minutes of the cup tie with 10 men, as Orel Mangala was sent off for a second bookable offence, Steve Cooper's men held on to win that sends them to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

For the final game before the World Cup break, Spurs will play Leeds United on Saturday, while Forest host Crystal Palace also on Saturday.

At the Emirates, the Gunners took the lead in the 20th minute against the run of play in a quick counter-attack after Eddie Nketiah with a great curled finish from just inside the 18-yard box put the Gunners in front.

Just seven minutes after, Roberto De Zerbi's men levelled after debutant goalkeeper Karl Hein rushed out of goal and took out Danny Welbeck, conceding a penalty. From the sport, Welbeck made no mistake.

Substitute Kaoru Mitoma completed the turnaround in the second half with a powerful right-footed strike.

Tariq Lamptey doubled Seagulls' lead less than 20 minutes from time as he used his pace to get in behind the Arsenal defence and slotted home and seal the win for Brighton.

Both sides have their final Premier League fixture before the World Cup this weekend, with Arsenal hosting Wolves on Saturday and Brighton taking on Aston Villa the next day at AMEX Stadium.
