Erik ten Hag is set to lift his final trophy as Ajax manager this evening with de Godenzonen on the verge of a 36th Eredivisie crown.
Ajax take on eighth-placed Heerenveen knowing that a win will be enough to seal the title at home. In the reverse fixture, Ajax won 2-0 in Heerenveen thanks to goals from Sébastien Haller and David Neres.
But Ajax don’t need to win if PSV Eindhoven, their closest rivals in the league table this year, fail to win against NEC. There would have been more pressure on Ajax if PSV had managed to defeat Feyenoord on Sunday, but a controversial Cyriel Dessers penalty resulted in a 2-2 draw instead that put Ajax on the verge.
Should the league leaders fail to defeat Heerenveen and PSV win against NEC, then the title will come down to the final day with Ajax facing a tricky fixture away to Vitesse and PSV facing an easier game when they travel to bottom-of-the-league Zwolle.
If Erik ten Hag’s team do win it will be the Dutch coach’s last trophy with the club before moving to Manchester United in a spell that has included three league titles.
